Photovoltaic cells are increasing in efficiency, but decreasing in cost although they are still the same old black squares placed on solar panels in an array format, but now they are able to concentrate energy to a particular point in a much better manner. The size of the cells is decreasing as their efficiency rises, meaning that each cell becomes cheaper to produce and at once more productive. Today, it takes us just about to produce one watt of energy from the sun in an hour. This is half the price of solar energy just prior to 1990. There's definite benefit in using electricity generated from the sun for the environment. Solar energy is an alternative source of energy which does not release any harmful wastes into the environment and simply uses one of the most natural sources of energy as its main ingredient. Today, solar cells are abundantly found on the rooftops of people's homes. You can use them without much trouble in heating your home, heating water and in producing power for all your needs . There it gets heated and is then supplied inside the home through pipes. It is possible to gather heat from the sun even in stormy and cloudy weather with modern photovoltaic cells. A company called Uni-Solar has brought about this breakthrough. The PV system is another system to produce solar power. Connecting this PV system to an electric grid that is close whenever there is excessive energy gathered in a particular home, this energy is allowed to pass into the energy grid and hence, the grid gets a supply of energy for itself and it will not have to depend on hydroelectric sources. By providing such a network, the PV system allows you to use a cheap environment friendly source of energy and itself works without much pressure on it. In some parts of the world, centralized solar arrays are being designed to serve whole urban and suburban settlements. The indication of the practicability and the economic sense behind solar power generation is clearly understood from the entry of several corporate entities into this area. Both Google and Wal-Mart have jumped on the solar power bandwagon, Google with a 1.6 megawatt plant on its corporate HQ roof and Wal-Mart with a 100 megawatt system that it will be installing soon. The popularity of solar power generation is being further fostered by countries like Germany, Switzerland, Japan and of course the US by subsidizing individuals or companies who are installing these systems and also providing additional tax deductions to them. We will soon be able to develop more and more methods to collect solar energy using innovating ways and this will see private entities entering into this field in a large way and help make it much more popular than it already is.
