If you include the pollution created by planting, harvesting, distilling and distributing the ethanol (not to mention the pesticides used on the crop), you create more pollution by adding ethanol to gasoline. It has 34% less energy per gallon than gasoline, so you burn 4% more fuel to go the same distance. This helps to cut down on the diversion of food supplies for ethanol production. The increased use of water is concerning though. The ethanol would have to be produced by countries with large water reserves. It's kind of ironic considering that most of our oil seems to come from dry desert regions. If you think that the prices of gas are bad, wait until they are determining the price of ethanol as well.
